πΌ E05 I worked from home
Hi everyone! π
This is Stephane from Living Online. Before I begin, I would like to say welcome to the new 223 subscribers. π TWR is all about trends and how each intertwines with each other.
I worked from home
Back on topic: Due to the second wave of lockdown, people are literally βlockedβ at home. So the need to rethink a βnewβ work environment. What I am sure of is that itβs not easy to work from home but we have to thank the EdTech industry for making it so easy, I mean easierβ¦ I decided to share some of my best discoveries with you. Read along and donβt hesitate to comment if you need any additional information.
π¨π»βπ» My no-code journey
Everyone is gonna ask me: What is no code? Well, itβs easy. Itβs when you donβt need to code to launch an app or a website. And this is possible for a few years now. I guess we have to thank Airtable or Webflow for making it a so-famous movement.
For me, I started with the basics and worked my way up. Here are a few guidelines if you ever want to start learning today. For me, I never grabbed the idea of following a course and then add the skill to my LinkedIn profile. I have to try it, fail, and retry to succeed.
Check our article on the subject to familiarise with the different platform that offers no code possible. According to Product Hunt, they are 2335 alternatives to building an app with code.
π Create your first newsletter with Substack (or an equivalent). In this case, TWR was born out of 23 founders and our love for tech products.
π Scrap data from your favorite e-commerce and organize it on Excel (you should be pretty good at using Google Chrome extensions or Google Sheet). Then, recreate this e-commerce with Shopify or Webflow (watch lots of Youtube tutorials for that part. Webflow can be tricky at times)
π² If you want to train yourself with app building, start by copying an existing app that you like (I took Uber and Facebook) with Glide or Bubble. That way, you know that you could add it to your portfolio later on.
π± Taking about a killer portfolio, try Figma for it! That way, you can actually share it with recruiters and show your graphical skills.
π Create your own database. I personally chose to share a free database of every tool, perk, or article I read for the past 5 years. In other terms, I gathered around every bookmark I had on my Chrome. Then, I launched it π. By that, I personally started to post randomly on LinkedIn then, once it got to a certain point where DM was annoying my notifications, scale it to every Facebook Group.
πΌ The jobs of tomorrow
Meanwhile, industry leaders are firing people, startups are doing fine: While the coronavirus pandemic has ravaged much of the worldβs economyβforcingΒ mass layoffs,Β government bailouts, and a wave ofΒ bankruptciesΒ andΒ business closuresβmost venture capital-backed startups have skated by unscathed. 52% of startups have been positively impacted by the pandemic or seen no impact to speak of according toΒ a working paperΒ from researchers at Harvard, Stanford, the University of Chicago, and the University of British Columbia.
So, something you will discover later this year is that it was not true for my own startup. I ended up closing my current startup. The main reason is that 2 waves, one after the other, destroyed our booming market. Also, I personally wanted to get out of the luxury industry. Back to our topic, I ended up the whole 2nd wave by applying to jobs on LinkedIn and Welcome To The Jungle. Annoying yeah? Well, by doing that pretty much every morning at 10 am, I discovered 3 jobs that were not out there:
AΒ growth hackerΒ specializes in developing new marketingΒ growthΒ programs and testing and executing these programs fast.Β Growth hackersΒ also focus on creating work processes that can be routinely tested with measurable results. For example, automating a mail when a user registered is the job of a good growth hacker. Another mission is to optimize Google Ad or Facebook Ad to lower the budget and increase the churn rate.
TheΒ Product Owner is a member of the Agile Team responsible for defining Stories and prioritizing the Team Backlog to streamline the execution of program priorities while maintaining the conceptual and technical integrity of the Features or components for the team. Mainly, they are the chief orchestra of a whole project making sure deadlines are well respected. Donβt get confused with the Project Manager.
Country Launcher doesnβt need any explanation. Your job is literally to launch a product in one country and move on to the other as fast as possible. This is only possible when your product is scalable. Uber started this professional trend by launching a country in two weeks!
π Working from anywhereΒ
The pandemic has to increase the unemployment rate but not just because companies donβt have the budget to keep their employees. People leave their actual job to follow their own passion and making money out of it. And this has a name now: Passion Economy. There are so many reasons why this trend is cool enough to get a name out of it and get a huge audience for it. Nomad Life.
You literally can work from anywhere. You just need a relatively stable WIFI connection and a laptop.
It is possible to mix making money by discovering the world. When I was in Goa (India), I found so many places I dreamt of living in one day. Imagine going for a swim in a paradisiac set-up in the morning and replying to some customersβ requests in the afternoonβ¦ and making quick money in the process.
Online tools are very powerful nowadays. You can create a website in seconds with WordPress (or Universe). You can use Figma to design your Instagram Ad posts. You can connect Stripe to your e-commerce and get money directly to your account. You can write an email with Mailchimp and grow your audience in literally 2 hours.
Thatβs it for me.
By reading this compact mail, you know 3 things:
Start your own journey into the no-code and nurture your LinkedIn profile.
Apply to new cool jobs that may overflow other boring ones in the near future.
Quit your job and live like a nomad for the rest of your life. Why not find another passionate economist to start a love story with.
